Some 2km to the east of the Potala is the most revered religious structure in Tibet – Jokhang Monastery (about 1.5-2 hours). Bustling with worshippers, a tour of Jokhang is a truly memorable experience. The quadrangle of streets surrounding the Jokhang is the Barkhor  (about 1.5-2 hours)– known as both the spiritual heart of Lhasa and the main commercial district for Tibetans. Stay overnight in Lhasa

Lhasa

About 8km west of central Lhasa is the Drepung (about 1.5-2 hours), once the world’s largest monastery, containing about 10,000 monks. The day’s sightseeing begins with a tour of the white monastic buildings and halls. From the top of the hill, the group can pause to enjoy the breathtaking view of the city.

The other of Lhasa’s two great Gelugpa monasteries is Sera (about 1.5-2 hours). Around 5km north of central Lhasa, Sera may not be as grandiose as Drepung, but its serenity is a great relief from the bustle of this pilgrimage centre. Stay overnight in Lhasa.

Nojin Kangtsang.

Leaving Yamdroktso is as spectacular as arriving, since you’ll cross the Karola, with its awesome roadside views of the Nojin Kangtsang Glacier.

After about 90km of outstanding views, the group arrives as Gyantse (about 30 minutes). There stands the 35m-high famous Kumbum. Packed with exquisite Tibetan sculpture and paintings, it is one of Tibet’s architectural wonders. Stay overnight in Shigatse.
