Jingzhou is an ancient city that was of strategic importance in its heyday. Many historical relics have been unearthed here, including such notable items as bronze articles, silks, and lacquered wares. Featured in the museum is a well-preserved mummy of a man that dates back to more than 2,000, the most ancient in China.
Ancient City In the Spring and Autumn period, (770-476 B.C.) the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Chu. Its walls were made from earth and were originally built in the third century by order of Guan Yu, a hero of the Three Kingdoms era. Later, in the Ming Dynasty, it was reconstructed using bricks and stones. The walls that we can see today had been extended in the Qing Dynasty and are the most well-preserved.
An interesting fact about the wall is that sticky rice was poured into the cracks to reinforce its strength.
It is no surprise that many fruitful excavations that have shed light on the Chu culture have taken place here, as it has been the capital of over twenty different historical kingdoms.
