China's most famous shopping street stretches 3.4-miles from the Bund in the east to Jing an Temple in the west. The eastern section of Nanjing road is nearly completely off limits to traffic and one of the world’s busiest streets. Millions traverse this walkway annually, shopping in one of the expansive department stores, or sightseeing amongst the art deco malls and apartment blocks that betray the extent of wealth in early 20th century Shanghai.
Nanjing East Road many no longer be the commercial hub it once was, but heading west from People Square is modern Shanghai’s true shopping heartland. Nanjing West Road is lined with malls, international brand names and designer label outlets. Despite sharing so many stores and labels with shopping streets the world over, a stroll along Nanjing Lu is never a dull experience. All walks of life can be seen on these sidewalks, and walkers can be distracted for hours when browsing the plethora of shops and markets. In the evening this neon-lit walkway hums with restaurants, clubs and bars offering long nights of adventure.
