On the eastern bank of the Huangpu River, Luijiazui is the core of Shanghai’s commercial and business community and features three of the world most outstanding examples of modern architecture. The Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower and Shanghai World Financial Centre are striking products of Shanghai’s extraordinary financial growth over the past 15 years.
The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is located in Pudong Park in Lujiazui, and was the first featured architectural structure of the growth of Pudong when it was constructed in the early 1990’s. The tower was apparently designed to resemble a string of pearls falling into a plate. The tower features a fantastic viewing tower with incredible vistas of the Huangpu River and much of the city. At 468 meters high (1,536 feet), this is the world's third tallest TV and radio tower. Although for years the centre piece of the Pudong skyline, the Pearl Tower was later overtaken by the angular magnificence of the Jin Mao Tower.
The Jin Mao was opened in 1999, and was the tallest building in the People’s Republic of China until 2007 when it was overtaken by the Shanghai World Financial Centre. The Jin Mao remains the most iconic building on the Shanghai skyline having featured in dozens of popular movies and enjoyed the patronage of hundreds-of-thousands of Shanghainese visitors. The dimensions of the Jin Mao Tower mostly are mostly in multiples of ‘8’, a digit which is considered particularly lucky in Chinese.
The Shanghai World Financial Centre has now become the focal point of the Pudong skyline, impossible to ignore at a height of 492 metres. Open to visitors since August 2008, the building has become one of the top tourist draws in China. After taking elevators up the buildings 101-storeys, it is possible to view the city of Shanghai from the world’s highest viewing platform.
