The climate in the Three Gorges region

The climate of the Three Gorges region belongs to the subtropical zone, and is characteristically warm and wet.  The yearly average temperature is 18.4℃. In the coldest month, January, the average temperature is 7.1℃. The hottest month is July and can get as hot as 29.3℃.  The yearly average rainfall is between 1000-1400ml，with July and August seeing the most. In winter it is warm, summer is hot, and rainy in all four seasons. This region is one of China’s rainstorm centers. Another interesting feature is that because the gorges are so deep and not much sunshine reaches the bottom, in winter, there is only 2 or 3 hours of sunshine during the afternoon and 5 or 6 hours of sunshine in summer. Another characteristic of the climate in the region is the wind that blows through the gorges.  The wind’s direction does not change a lot, but usually blows from the west of the east.
