Money & exchange

The currency of Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee, with the smallest unit of currency called Paise. There are 100 Paise to one Rupee. Coins are minted in denominations of 10 Paise, 25 Paise, 50 Paise, 1 Rupee and 2 Rupees.

Notes are printed in denominations of one, two, five, ten, 20, 25, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Rupees. The Rupee is used throughout the country and visitors can purchase it upon arrival.

Travelers can find money-exchangers on every corner of big cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhra. In smaller towns too there are currency exchanges, both private and government endorsed. It is recommended visitors use government affiliated branches.

Banks are open between 9 am and 3 pm from Monday through to Friday, though many in Kathmandu are open on the weekend. Private banks such as the Bank of Kathmandu and the Himalayan Bank also operate in most areas of Nepal and often contain a bureau de change.

Health & safety

It is advised that travelers avoid street food and unclean water, as most diseases in Nepal are water-borne. Be aware that it may take a few days for your system to acclimatize to Nepali food.

Nepal struggles with a higher-than-usual frequency of Malaria, Kala-azar, Japanese Encephalitis, Tuberculosis, Dysentery, Hepatitis A and HIV/AIDS. According to Public Health Department in Kathmandu, the major health problems are Dysentery and other water borne diseases. In the villages of Nepal, skin diseases are also a major problem.

Avoid drinking water from unknown sources. Try to carry packaged drinking water wherever you go and don't share drinking vessels. Keep packets of Oral Re-hydration Solution (ORS) with you and carry insect repellant.

Climate and weather

From April to July, the plains of Nepal are very hot, with temperatures hovering around 42c. Those visiting the plains should wear light and airy clothing for maximum comfort. However, visitors to the high altitude areas in the north, including the Himalayas, should prepare for low temperatures.

July to October is the wet season. Monsoons are heavy and fairly common. Visitors to low or high altitude areas should bring plenty of waterproof clothing.

During the winter months of November to February, heavy clothing is advised when visiting the plains and low altitude regions of Nepal. High altitude regions are off limits during this period, as conditions are extremely hazardous.

Public transportation

Cabs and rickshaws are available in all towns and villages in Nepal. However, be prepared to share the vehicle with others as the driver may wish pick up more fares en route. A '10 Rupee' taxi is a car that doesn't depart until all seats are full.

For daily or hourly car hire, keep an eye out for ‘Private' cabs offering greater comfort at a higher price. Busses and trains are also available for travel within the country, although remember that all modes of public transport are likely to be crowded and uncomfortable.

Tourist busses

Tourist busses are available for booking through the reception of your hotel. Book a few days in advance to avoid disappointment and be aware that most routes will only take in developed areas with good road access.
